Gabriel has a good story and characterization, and I enjoyed the character of the troubled child who in the hands of the governess becomes a lovely human being.
The story is full of suspense and terror and it is also full of love between a young woman and the child. It is also full of the love that a young woman has for the child and the trust they both have in each other.
The fear people faced was described well enough to make it seem real, but the bits of kindness shown throughout the book were nice bright spots of hope.
