A man is trying to decipher a mediaeval document found near Cairo while living in Egypt, but he is being stymied by a tale of his neighbours who became his family and the story of the Jewish merchant he is trying to uncover.
It is one of his best books and I definitely recommend it. Shadow Lines and Calcutta chromosome were the only books I didn't like.
This is a great piece of history and tells us about our own past, and only Ghosh can make it come alive and grip us.
