The filters are made from a fine mesh that is pressed into shape. They last a long time, do not erode, but after a few years may need to be replaced.

It yields just over 23 ounces of coffee, but I may cut back to 8 tablespoons to make sure the taste and color are good.
Do you heat the water in the french press?
You don't need to heat the water in a kettle or pot, it's just how I tell you when the water is ready to pour into the French press.
Is it possible to use it to carry it in a backpack?
Yes. If you have a waterproof backpack with a liner that you would want to drink coffee out of, that is full.
